Let's hook and go!
Pier 33 and Chaparral Boats present Pier 33's 2010 Trail Away. Our destination is Hamlin Lake at Ludington State Park in Ludington, Michigan.
Ludington State Park is known as "The Queen of the State Parks". LSP has shoreline on both Lake Michigan and Hamlin Lake. Our Trail Away activities will be focused on the Hamlin Lake side of the Park.
There's a modern launch ramp located at this beautifully maintained State Park, suitable for most boats up to about 24 feet. There is generally plenty of parking and boats can be nudged up to the shoreline along Hamlin Lake Beach while you are on shore at the park.
Pier 33 has reserved the large picnic shelter near the boat launch and this will serve as our headquarters for the day, beginning at about 11 AM. We'll have plenty of food throughout the day for our visiting boaters and we may add a fun event or two as the day draws near. If we have a forecast for very foul weather, we may re-schedule for a sunnier day. Check this site again before departing on your trip.
Pier 33 boaters, Chaparral owners and boaters of all brands are encouraged to attend. Bring your Chaparral, your dinghy, runabout, PWC or any other suitable craft of choice.
We have extended our RSVP deadline. There is no charge to join in, but RSVP's are required. Please be sure to RSVP no later than Thursday, August 5.

We will likely arrange a Sunday morning caravan leaving Pier 33 at about 7:30 AM, for those boaters who would like to trailer as a group. LSP is about a 2 ½ hour drive from Pier 33 in St. Joseph. Check this site again or call Pier 33 a day or two before the event for caravan information. Boaters traveling on their own can begin arriving at the Park anytime and Pier 33 will be staffed at the picnic shelter by 11 AM.
There is an entry fee for the park. Yearly or daily permits are available (dailies are either $6 or $8, depending on state of residence).
For your day at LSP, come ready for fun.
- Visit the dunes, accessible only by boat, at the north end of Hamlin Lake. You'll find warm, crystal clear water, incredible unspoiled sand and lots of exploring. Bring along a full set of beach toys and gear. This is one of the nicest natural, secluded beaches in the Midwest.
- Hike the park. There are trails in every direction, for a quick stretch of your legs or a power-walk, all through scenic natural areas.
- Float the Big Sable River, all the way to Lake Michigan. Bring an inflatable tube
(the concession stand has an inflator and also sells tubes) and float the Big Sable River from the Hamlin Lake dam all the way to Lake Michigan. The river is clear and clean and is a lazy, gentle float until meeting the slightly cooler currents of Lake Michigan. Every float down the Big Sable adds a year to your lifespan. Give it a try.
- Ski, tube or board Hamlin Lake. Hamlin is actually two lakes, joined at The Narrows.
Upper Hamlin Lake runs West to East and Lower Hamlin Lake runs North to South, so no matter which way the breeze is blowing, you will find calm waters for your watersports. The Lake is over 5,000 acres, so there is plenty of room for everyone.
- Bring your fishing poles. Whether from shoreside at Hamlin Beach, the Big Sable, or out on the open water, Hamlin Lake is a fisherman's haven. Hamlin Lake offers a smorgasbord of fish. Tiger muskie, northern pike, large and small mouth bass, perch, crappie, blue gill and over 600,000 walleye, planted several years ago, promise a superb catch.
- Kayak or canoe Hamlin Lake and explore the bayous and nearby woods. Kayaks, canoes and paddleboats are available at the concession stand near our headquarters.
- Finish the day with a visit to downtown Ludington. Try the House of Flavors, for an incredible ice cream and sandwich selection. We may even squeeze in a quick lakefront shuffleboard tournament at the municipal beach, downtown. If you would like to stay over the night before or after the trail away, CLICK HERE for more information regarding lodging and other services around Ludington.
Remember, there's no charge for this event and all trailering boaters are invited. Pier 33 and Chaparral will provide a cookout and gifts for all registered boats.
RSVP's are very important, so that we can be properly prepared for your arrival. Please CLICK HERE to register for this event, or call Tighe Curran at (800) 886-0493.
